It is the\u00a0<strong>most effective known treatment for insomnia and has been proven to work for as many as 70% to 80% of patients<\/strong>\u00a0with primary insomnia in clinical trials. This is a popular misconception. While common advice such as \u201cavoid caffeine after 4pm\u201d, \u201climit alcohol in the evening to no more than 2 drinks before 7pm\u201d or \u201cminimize the use of blue-light emitting devices an hour before sleep\u201d are helpful, there is\u00a0<strong>little evidence that sleep hygiene alone is sufficient to treat insomnia<\/strong>.<\/p><p>For any insomnia treatment to be effective in the long-term, it needs to address the root causes behind sleeplessness (recall Spielman\u2019s 3 P\u2019s Model from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stellarsleep.com\/blog\/understanding-insomnia\">Part 1<\/a>). Traditionally, CBT-I is a multicomponent treatment that combines several approaches, including\u00a0<strong>cognitive restructuring<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>stimulus control<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>sleep restriction<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-87f8491 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"87f8491\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Cognitive restructuring<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ca4b57 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9ca4b57\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A core principle in CBT-I is that the way we sleep is influenced by our thoughts and feelings about sleep. People with insomnia often have dysfunctional thoughts about sleep that result in behaviors that are detrimental to good sleep.<\/p><p>Cognitive restructuring attempts to break this destructive feedback loop by\u00a0<strong>identifying, challenging and reframing the thoughts and feelings that contribute to insomnia<\/strong>. For example, many insomniacs have distortive thoughts such as thinking \u201cOh my god, it\u2019s been 15 minutes but I still haven\u2019t fallen asleep. I\u2019m never going to be able to fall asleep\u201d. These thoughts, in addition to being logically wrong, also create a negative stress cycle where the longer you can\u2019t fall asleep, the more you think these thoughts, the more stressed you become, and the more unlikely you are to fall asleep soon.<\/p><p>Cognitive restructuring equips patients with the tools and skills to challenge and alter their dysfunctional thoughts and feelings.
